At check out, the merchant's
web site provides the consumer's purchase
information to
ZAPI™
, where it is validated and formatted for insertion
into the "Buy with ZixCharge" button in the browser window on the member's PC.
ZAPI is a simple software
interface that streamlines the ZixCharge transaction
processing at the merchant site.

The member clicks on the "Buy" button and is redirected
to the ZixCharge web site via an SSL connection. The charge slip,
which appears in the browser window of the member's PC, displays the
purchase information and merchant's promotional information. The member
then authorizes the use of a particular payment method by one of the following:
- Using the default payment method from their ZixWallet™.
- Opening their ZixWallet and selecting a payment method.
- Entering a new payment method.

The ZixCharge secure data center
receives the member's payment choice, authenticates the
merchant, and validates the transaction data. The member's credit card information is
retrieved and then, following any merchant-specified fraud screening procedures,
submitted along with other appropriate data to the authorization
processor on behalf of the merchant. The authorization is submitted
using the merchant's "second merchant authorization ID."

The authorization processor
approves the transaction and returns an approval code to
the ZixCharge data center.

If the transaction was not
approved, a message is sent to the charge slip indicating
that the member should choose an alternate payment type and
resubmit the charge slip. Once approved, ZixCharge records the
transaction and creates a ZixCharge certificate
containing the approval code and other data for the merchant.
The member is informed
of the approval.

The member is then linked back to
the merchant's site. ZAPI interprets and authenticates the
returned ZixCharge certificate, and conveys the approval code
and other information to the merchant.
